What are Active Dog Nature Hikes?

Our nature hikes are like school for dogs, giving them time to socialize, exercise and get the lead out!

The hikes include one our full time staff emailing you each morning with an expected pickup window for your dog at your home, a 60-90 minute group hike on one of our three large parcels of privately owned land and photos or videos of your dog in action posted online every time they hike with us!

We are proud to add that we now own over 650 acres of land to hike with our clients’ dogs on, making us the largest dog hiking company in New England.

Frequently Asked Hiking Questions

  • Is my dog a good candidate for pack hikes?

Most likely, the answer is yes. If your dog is skittish or aggressive towards other dogs or people, then the answer may be no. Sometimes dogs do better when they’re away from their homes and owners, allowing them to relax and not be in protective or territorial mode. We also offer training to those who wish to pursue it. We can discuss this at more length during our initial meet & greet as well.

  • What geographical location do you cover?

We currently service northern Westchester County, NY, southern Duthchess County, NY and southern Fairfield County, CT.

  • Will my dog be off leash?

Yes, if he or she has decent recall and likes to socialize with other dogs. We often start dogs on leash so they learn the routine – pickup, hike with friends, go home to their family. Most dogs thrive in the “pack” environment. While not all dogs graduate to off leash hikes with Active Dog, well over 90% do.

  • What weather do you hike in?

We hike in almost all weather conditions, with the exception of hurricanes and snow conditions calling for three or more inches of snow in the forecast. Clients can cancel or adjust services at anytime prior to 7 PM at no charge for the following day’s services.

  • What do you do if my dog runs off?

It doesn’t happen often, but we have a list of specific protocols we follow. We have also partnered with Fi, a GPS and activity monitoring collar company, which many of our clients have purchased for their dog’s safety.

  • What if my dog gets injured while on a hike or under Active Dog’s care?

If a dog gets injured, no matter the cause, we will notify the owner as soon as possible. If a dog hurts themselves by exercising or playing on their own, the owner will be responsible for any veterinary care. If another dog were to bite or injure a client’s dog, Active Dog will reimburse the owner for veterinary care, then ask the other dog’s owner who caused the injury to reimburse the company.

  • How often do most people send their dogs out for hikes?

On average, most clients send their dogs out 2-3 days a week, typically following a MWF or Tu/Th schedule. Some clients opt to send their dog(s) seven days a week, while others opt for one. We strongly recommend our hikers join us a minimum of two times per week, preferably on a recurring schedule. This gives your dog the opportunity to become familiar and comfortable with several staff members, as well as gain familiarity and friendships with the same pack of dogs each week. Just like children, routine and consistency is key for dogs. We believe when they join us regularly it makes for a safer environment for everyone!

  • How do I sign my dog up for hikes?

Once you’ve completed the new client form, our founder, Eric Bleile, will reach out to set up a meeting at your home. Eric will bring his dog to the meet and greet to get an idea of how your dog interacts with another dog, as well as review all services offered in person.

*During Covid-19, the meet and greets will be held outside. Eric will abide by social distancing standards and wear a mask at all times.

  • Why do we have a meet and greet before starting services?

Either Eric or another Active Dog staff member meet with all new clients at their homes before starting services to make sure the client and dog are a good and safe fit for the company and our staff. We also will like go over everything in person and start a relationship with the new prospective client. Questions such as which door to go to for pickup and drop off, where does your dog sleep, how will we get into the house if no one is home, what veterinarian do you use, is your dog up to date on all vaccinations, do you have an electric fence and going over the Time To Pet software are a few examples of the questions and details covered in the meetings.

  • Are you open 365 day a year?

    Yes, we are!

These guys are awesome…they pick our dogs up while we’re at work, take them for a nature hike, and even publish photos and vids on facebook so I can see they’re having a great time! Highly recommended…my pups are so happy.”

Great service! They have taken my dog on many hikes! He is always happy and tired when he is returned home! They have been available last minute to pick up my dog for the times that I haven’t scheduled in advance. Highly recommend!”

I absolutely LOVE Active Dog.  My two dogs Buddy & Bella get so excited when I put there collars on in the morning because they know exactly where they are going.  They come home tired & happy.  Would highly recommend Eric & his team.  They are fantastic!”

We all love our dogs, and want the best for them.
While you’re busy at work, imagine your dog was out with friends and enjoying life instead of staying home alone.
